Being Present

Being Present

We can’t change the past, and we can’t predict the future, so why are we so fixated on them? This month’s toolbox talk is about being present.

Being present means focusing on your thoughts, surroundings, and body in the moment. This doesn’t mean we can’t learn from the past or plan for the future, but it helps us slow down and focus on what we can change in the present.

Being present is a vital tool on-site because it keeps workers engaged and focused on their tasks. In such a dangerous and highly skilled job, focus and precision are paramount to success. Additionally, being present calms the mind by freeing us from worrying about the future or ruminating on the past.

Here are a few tips from our toolbox talk for being present:

  • Start to notice and take note of how well you are focusing, and make a conscious effort to improve your focus if needed. Writing in a journal or log can help focus the mind and improve work efficiency.
  • Try active listening during discussions or when receiving directions. This involves giving your full attention to the person speaking, avoiding distractions, and understanding that you may need to explain the information to a coworker.
  • Eliminate distractions such as unnecessary clutter, chemicals, or equipment to fully concentrate.
  • Identify any personal concerns causing your mind to wander and address them.

Being present is crucial to keeping both mind and body healthy and engaged throughout the day.
