Practicing Gratitude

Practicing Gratitude

This month’s toolbox talk is about practicing gratitude. We’ve touched on gratitude in our past blog posts, and since we value it so much, we’re discussing it again! Gratitude truly is one of the best ways to improve your mental health. Like deep breathing, practicing gratitude is free and can be done anytime, anywhere.

Often, our minds focus on worst-case scenarios to keep us safe and prepare for potential negative outcomes. We might also dwell on negative experiences in an attempt to improve our relationships or circumstances. While negativity can be effective for growth, it’s important to balance it with positivity. Research shows that practicing gratitude improves health, enhances quality of life, and helps reduce anxiety and depression.

What is practicing gratitude?

Practicing gratitude means recognizing and appreciating the positive aspects of your life. It could be as simple as being thankful for a place to sleep, food to eat, or the strength to work. Acknowledging these positives can help shift your perspective and foster a more optimistic outlook.

Ways to incorporate gratitude into your company or life:

  1. Thank-you notes: Writing thank-you notes is a great way to express appreciation and gratitude. Showing gratitude to others also helps us feel more grateful ourselves and strengthens connections.
  1. Job Site Banners: Displaying banners at the job site to express gratitude to your crew can foster a sense of unity and appreciation.
  1. Provide meals or snacks: Who doesn’t love free food? Offering meals or snacks to your crew is an excellent way to show your appreciation. You’ll quickly become everyone’s favorite!
  1. Recognition: Simply acknowledging someone’s efforts at the end of a shift is an easy yet meaningful way to show gratitude.

Not only does practicing gratitude improve your mental health, but it also demonstrates that you care about your team. Gratitude can be a powerful motivator, helping to create a positive and productive work environment.
