You may remember our blog post debuting our Loneliness Toolbox Talk. Well, it’s back because this month’s final toolbox talk is Combating Loneliness. As we approach the holiday season, loneliness can become more intense for some individuals who are struggling.
Loneliness is the negative feeling that arises when you crave human connection. While we all feel lonely at times, chronic loneliness—especially when linked to depression and anxiety—can isolate us and lead to a downward spiral in our thoughts. People experiencing suicidal thoughts often feel incredibly alone in their struggles. With suicide rates rising in the construction industry, addressing loneliness is essential to tackling this serious issue.
In our toolbox talk, we discuss effective and long-term strategies for combating loneliness. One thing you’ll notice is that many of our tips don’t involve simply spending more time with others. Instead, they focus on accepting one’s circumstances and challenging negative self-talk. Moving toward self-acceptance often makes it easier to connect with others because it builds confidence in the process.
For example, you might challenge negative thoughts about social interactions. Do you find yourself comparing yourself to others or replaying past negative experiences? Try addressing these thoughts—either in the moment or by writing them down in a notebook. Developing this small awareness of your thought patterns can shift your perspective, motivating you to seek more meaningful social interactions or achieve personal contentment.
